MEPs are calling on Member States to consider obesity as a chronic illness. 15.5% of the European population is overweight. The phenomenon is spreading very rapidly in Member States. The UK, Ireland and Malta are most seriously affected by the illness. At the age of 51, Jean remembers always being overweight. The many diets he tried never achieved the expected results. Even worse, he continued to put on weight. His weight went up as high as 175kg. Basically, you have double the normal weight, or the ideal weight. So imagine doing everything you do while carrying yourself on your back. It's about that. It's really... Going upstairs was tough. Getting out of the car... Everything was hard. I was out of breath. Since adolescence, Jean has always carried extra weight. He thinks his sedentary lifestyle is the main reason for it. I tried several sports, but I never really enjoyed doing sport back then. The lack of physical activity is... I've got a sedentary job. I don't get too stressed either. That's where the reason lies. A bit of sport would have done me good. As a victim of sleep apnoea, Jean's condition was life-threatening. He no longer had any choice. Five months ago he had an operation in order to lose weight. We went to the operating theatre where his surgeon is doing a similar operation. Any cardiac contraindications? -None. The cardiology tests are complete and normal. OK. Professor Cadière, what type of operation are you doing now? What we're in the process of doing is a gastric bypass. We're going to make it so that the food no longer passes through the stomach. We'll bypass the stomach and the food will go directly from the oesophagus to the intestine. It's a technique that allows people to lose over 50% of their excess weight. The stomachs of people who are obese are enormous, so they can eat very large quantities very quickly without feeling that their stomach is full. If we hadn't done the operation, his life expectancy would be limited. So the risk of the operation here was less than the danger of his excess weight. Hi. -Hello. How are you? Let's get on with it. Five months after the operation, Jean has lost over 35kg, but the surgery on its own isn't a miracle cure. Before the operation I found it hard to do exercises. I was always... let's say, out of breath. I wouldn't have been able to answer any questions at the same time. You're not asked to go on a diet, but to change your life, to change your way of seeing things. Jean has chosen a multidisciplinary approach. A personal trainer, a psychologist and a nutritionist follow every step of his weight loss. We're seeing an explosion in obesity problems throughout the world. You can see it in certain graphs, with the USA always in the lead. They were the first to innovate with junk food and sedentary lifestyles, and the others are all following now. Since we didn't meet before your operation, when and how did you put on this weight? I put it on... The UK, Ireland and Malta are the EU countries with the highest rates of obesity in their populations, between 22 and 25%. To combat the problem, the EP, among other things, wants better information to be available, in particular, on our food labelling.
