Recognition of diplomas is a fact even for European skiers. But for snowboard teaching in France it doesn't quite go without saying. We investigated at the foot of the slopes in Les Deux Alpes, France. Max, age three, may one day be a snowboarding champion. But if he wants to teach it, will he have to do the same as his teacher here? With no specific French diploma, she took the Swiss certificate in snowboarding and mutual recognition of qualifications eventually prevailed. Since I passed the third grade and I got a legal precedent set by going to court, I was given an authorisation to teach and a few months... well, many months later, I got the first snowboard instructor's licence. At the International Ski School, by tradition they pay particular attention to foreign skiers who visit the Alpine resorts. They admit that without a specific French qualification snowboarding here hasn't experienced the boom it deserved. Perhaps all the countries, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy and France, should have this snowboard diploma, so that clients can have snowboard lessons with an instructor who has done snowboarding. I think that improvement should be made for French ski instructors. At the French Ski School, which includes the vast majority of Alpine ski instructors, they don't agree. They're aware of the need for internationalisation of instructors, and the resort's iPhone app is already bilingual. But there's no question of separate diplomas for skiing and snowboarding. The two disciplines are very similar. Of course, the technical content is really identical. Then the practical aspect is a bit different. But in the French diploma today, snowboarding is addressed at every stage of the diploma, in order to try to have people who are trained to teach beginners right up to expert snowboarders. As head of the Evolusnow Association, Florence Bonnier defends the independence of snowboard teaching. We're in the process of setting up France Snowboard to bring together all fully-qualified snowboard instructors working in France who are entitled to work as independents. We want to bring them together to advance our ideas. It might develop politically and we'll have to form a professional body. At the Snowboard School, Florence meets Mathias Prinz again. A pioneer of snowboarding in France, the German now works in solar energy as the local authorities made life so impossible for him. I employed my snowboard instructors, who came from the UK, Germany, and from France with a Swiss qualification. I registered them for social insurance in France with proper working conditions. But every time I was made to stop snowboard lessons from these instructors on the slopes by the police force, by the French Ski School. And my snowboard instructors couldn't work any more. So there were problems with tour operators who had booked lessons, etc. Very difficult. Will France remain the only country without a real snowboard diploma? It is an Olympic discipline. In the USA, there are four snowboards for every six skiers. Here it's one for every nine.
